Sitting on a sandy beach
the sun setting, glowing
orange and yellow.
The breeze lightly blowing
through my hair.

Silence my only companion
on this summer’s night.
Thinking of the times now past,
what was right,
and what would I do differently.

Would I seek the thrills
and live life as a dare,
which I thought made me
independent and more aware
than those who lived the average life?

I wrote this poem when I was 20 years old. I’d recently joined the Air Force and was at my first assignment in Germany. When I wrote this poem, my mind was on my life before I joined, and one of the last camping trips I’d taken with friends at the beach before leaving WA. The sunset picture is from that trip.
